Dream-Land

Edgar Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. That makes him Capricorn, on the cusp of Aquarius. His parents were David and Elizabeth Poe. David was born in Baltimore on July 18, 1784. Elizabeth Arnold came to the U.S. from England in 1796 and married David Poe after her first husband died in 1805. They had three children, Henry, Edgar, and Rosalie. Dream-Land is one of Edgar Allan Poe’s most consistently misread and misunderstood poems. This poem was all about describing the setting, and Edgar Allan Poe used vivid language and sensory words to describe his image. His use of imagery captures the audience so that they can imagine the land he is trying to create. He also used end rhymes throughout the entire poem. The poem speaks of endless seas without shores, tumbling mountains, and fire in the skies. It seems as if he is describing a sort of hell or perhaps a nightmare. It also speaks of "ill angels," which could also mean demons. The tone of this poem is dark and dangerous. The speaker is an ambiguous entity that watches where the traveller goes and describes the environment through which he traverses. Edgar Allan Poe's poem Dream-Land focuses on a theme of reviewing decisions and creating more choices. This poem relates to Dark Romanticism because it emphasizes the mistakes and the dark past of a man and how he runs away from it all in despair.
