At Bertram's Hotel

Reader:

At Bertram's Hotel is a work of detective fiction by Agatha Christie and first published in the UK by the Collins Crime Club on 15 November. Reviews at the time of publication considered the denouement too far-fetched, but that it has "phenomenal zest and makes a reasonably snug read." Another reviewer called it "an ingenious mystery" reliant on Christie's skilful writing style. A review in 1990 found the plot "creaky" but praised the "hotel atmosphere" which "is very well conveyed and used." The character Elvira Blake was drawn well, and the careful description of the way older people look in 1965 compared to earlier eras, showed that Christie's "sharp eye had not dimmed". Miss Marple arrives at Bertram's Hotel in London and meets an old acquaintance in the lobby. As the two ladies catch up, Miss Marple notices how often her friend mistakes guests walking through the hotel for other people. Miss Marple puts this down to old age. At this same time, Miss Marple and her friend watch as the notorious Lady Bess Sedgwick enters the hotel. Miss Marple is aware of Lady Sedgwick from multiple newspaper articles that have discussed Lady Sedgwick's escapades over the years. Lady Sedgwick appears to enjoy scandal, having left her husband for another man years before, and indulging in such behaviour as working with the resistance during the war, flying aeroplanes, and driving fast cars. The latest rumours have Lady Sedgwick involved with a famous race car driver. You can listen online to free English audiobook “At Bertram's Hotel” by Agatha Christie on our website.
