The Open Window

Reader:

Saki is the pen name of Hector Hugh Munro or H.H. Munro, a British writer known mostly for his short stories. Saki was born in Burma, where he lived until his mother died after a miscarriage during a visit to England when Saki was around two years old. The loss of her child was attributed to the significant shock she suffered after being charged by a bull, even though she wasn't struck by the animal. As a result, Saki was sent to live with his grandmother and two of his aunts in a very strict, religious household, which is believed to have influenced his writing and some of his characters. In The Open Window, Framton Nuttel has been sent to a small country town in England to recover from some type of nervous condition. Framton's doctors have told him to avoid any "mental excitement" or "violent physical exercise." He is to take a "complete rest." Framton's sister has provided Framton with letters of introduction to people she met when she had visited the same town, four years before. The sister provided the letters to counter what she knows is Framton's tendency to hide from everyone and mope. When he arrives, Sappleton’s niece Vera entertains him while he waits for his host. Vera has a vivid imagination and enjoys weaving stories for her own amusement. Her latest victim is no exception. The tale she weaves about her family is fantastical, and Nuttel falls for it hook, line, and sinker… You can listen online to free English audiobook “The Open Window” by Saki on our website.
