The Adventure of the Hansom Cabs

Reader:

Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist and travel writer, most noted for Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and A Child's Garden of Verses. Born in 1850, Robert Louis Stevenson grew up in Edinburgh where his father was a well-respected lighthouse engineer. Stevenson almost followed his father’s example, studying engineering at Edinburgh University, but at twenty-one decided to become a writer. Several of Stevenson's texts are written for children. Treasure Island was the first of these, inspired by a map Stevenson had drawn with his stepson Lloyd whilst holidaying in Scotland. Robert Louis Stevenson’s three tales about the Suicide Club emerge from a heartfelt appreciation of romance, which is at once startlingly idealistic and profoundly conservative. Although adult readers may value the ambition and modernist maturity of “The Suicide Club,” these stories paradoxically hark back to the simplicity of children’s literature. The Adventure of the Hansom Cabs is the third story of The Suicide Club collection. Former Lieutenant Brackenbury Rich is beckoned into the back of an elegantly appointed Hansom by a mysterious cabman who whisks him off to a party. There the host continuously assesses his various guests and asks them to depart until only a handful are left. The host then reveals himself to be Colonel Geraldine and invites Rich to join him on a secret mission… Just push the play button and enjoy the free online English audiobook “The Adventure of the Hansom Cabs” on our website!
