Bridget Jones’s Diary

Helen Fielding is an English novelist and screenwriter, best known as the creator of the fictional character Bridget Jones, and a sequence of novels and films beginning with the life of a thirtysomething singleton in London trying to make sense of life and love. She was part of the screenwriting team on the associated movies. Bridget Jones begins the year with a set of resolutions dedicated to reducing her alcohol and tobacco intake, reducing her weight, and developing inner poise and a “functional relationship with a responsible adult.” This last resolution translates into finding a man. Bridget is chasing after Daniel, a man who will not commit to her. Their on and off relationships, which isn't exclusive, frustrates her beyond all reason. She wants to be with him. When she found him with another woman naked at his residence, Bridget loses it. She abandons all hope of finding a husband. Instead, she decides to focus on her career and ignore her family's persistent chiding about her singleness. The other significant characters in the novel are Bridget’s parents. From the outset, they are having problems. After more than thirty years of marriage, Bridget’s mother decides to separate from her husband and pursue a career as a television presenter. Although she denies it to Bridget, she also becomes romantically involved with a person of questionable character, a Portuguese man named Julio.
