Stone's Fall

An English art historian, novelist and journalist Iain George Pears was born on 8 August 1955 in Coventry, England. He was educated at Warwick School, an all-boys public school in Warwick, and studied at Wadham College, Oxford. Before writing, he worked as a reporter for the BBC, Channel 4 and ZDF in Germany. Pears first came to international prominence with his best selling book An Instance of the Fingerpost, which was translated into several languages. He is known for experimenting with different narrative structures, presenting four consecutive versions of the same events in An Instance of the Fingerpost. Stone's Fall is his 2009 historical-mystery in which an ageing BBC reporter approaching retirement in 1953, Matthew Braddock is on a farewell tour, visiting the old Paris bureau. Matthew Braddock worked briefly for Elizabeth, Lady Ravenscliff, and, although embittered by the experience, he attends the funeral service. There, he happens to meet a London attorney whose firm just happens to have something for him. A longtime associate of Lord and Lady Ravenscliff, Henry Cort, left a box to be delivered to Braddock only after both of the Ravenscliffs were dead. Before retrieving the box, Braddock reads over a manuscript that he prepared after working for Elizabeth. As a successful crime reporter, he is engaged to help Elizabeth find a mysterious child mentioned in her late husband’s will.
