Forfeit

Reader:

Dick Francis wrote more than 40 international best-sellers. His first book was his autobiography The Sport of Queens, for which he was offered the aid of a ghostwriter, which he spurned. The book's success led to his becoming the racing correspondent for London's Sunday Express newspaper, and he continued in that job for 16 years. He set his first thriller, Dead Cert, published in 1962, in the world of horse racing, establishing a specialized niche for his work. His novel Whip Hand is one of only two novels to have received both the Gold Dagger Award for Best Novel of 1979 and the Edgar Award for Best Novel of 1980. Forfeit represents a leap forward in Francis’s craft, with more emphasis on characterization and less on action for action’s sake. Largely because of its greater realism and stronger characterization, Forfeit won the prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Award, bringing his work to the attention of a wider American audience. At first, it looks like reporter Bert Checkov's fall from a seven-story building is an accident. Until horse racing columnist James Tyrone uncovers a blackmail scheme involving top racehorses. Somebody is causing these horses to be withdrawn from their races within four days of the scheduled race, at which time all entry fees are forfeited. Ty knows Checkov is a drunk, but he also knows Checkov would not sell his column. His investigation brings him face-to-face with persons who will stop at nothing, even murder, to achieve their ends… Enjoy free online English audiobook “Forfeit”, a breathtaking novel by Dick Francis.
