The Outline of History

Reader:

Herbert George Wells was an English writer, born at Atlas House, 162 High Street in Bromley, Kent, on 21 September 1866. He was prolific in many genres, writing dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, satire, biography, and autobiography, and even including two books on recreational war games. Nowadays H.G. Wells is mostly remembered for his innovative science fiction novels, a genre he is considered one of the founders of. Works such as ‘The Time Machine’, ‘The War of the Worlds’ and ‘The Invisible Man’ have all been adapted into movies while also serving as frameworks for a variety of subsequent writers. These works, of course, deserve the acclaim they receive, but to focus exclusively on Wells’ contribution to the sci-fi genre is to overlook plenty of his extensive talents, something highlighted by ‘A Short History Of The World’. It first appeared in an illustrated version of 24 fortnightly instalments beginning on 22 November 1919 and was published as a single volume in 1920. Several revised versions were produced during Wells' lifetime. He kept notes on factual corrections he received from educators around the world. The last revision in his lifetime was published in 1939. In 1949, an expanded version was produced by author & scholar Raymond Postgate, whose additional material initially expanded the timeline thru WWII, with subsequent additions thru 1969.
